September 2002:
The following is the contents of a
letter received from the Director of The Indian Institute of Social
Welfare & Business Management (part of the University of Calcutta)
Dear Mr.Morris
The IISWBM based in Calcutta, is the
first Business School of India having started management study
courses in 1953 under the auspices of the University of Calcutta,
Government of West Bengal and Government of India. Since then we
have conducted many innovative management programmes and are
pleased to inform you that our institution today is ranked as one
of the premier business schools in the country.
This year we are making preparations
for our Golden Jubilee Celebrations next April. In view of the
tremendous impact and influence of sports around the world we feel
that there is an immediate and imperative need to train students
in the various aspects of sports management - administration,
sponsorship, research, press and public relations.
Moreover, as no other university or
institute in India offers sports management as an academic course
leading to a degree or diploma, we felt that we would take the
initiative to launch a 6-month diploma programme on sports
management in the first instance beginning from December, 2002.
In this context, we have appointed Mr.
Raju Mukherji, former Bengal Cricket Captain and sports
researcher, to head the department handling the sports management
programme.
When Mr. Mukherji recommended your
name for the advisory committee, we unanimously accepted the
suggestion as having a person of international stature would
greatly benefit not only our institution but also have a catalytic
effect on the sports movement in India.
In view of the above, we would feel
honoured to have you as a member of the advisory committee. We
would request you to accept our offer for the cause of sports and
sports people of India.
We look forward to your early
confirmation.
Yours sincerely,
Ashoke K Dutta
Director.
Irrvin has accepted this position
which he since learned would normally only be offered to prominent
sports people.
